Experienced boaters know what to find in high quality boats. Quality materials, high performance functions, fuel economy, durability and comfortable space are just few features that an excellent boat can offer.

So you love fishing, and you want to get your own fishing boat. You’ve got a lot of choices to make, including choosing a boat. Why should you buy an aluminum boat instead of, say, a fiberglass boat?

You’ll find that you have a wealth of choices for buying boats. You can get, primarily, wooden or timber fishing boats, fiberglass boats and aluminum boats. All make fine boats, and for looks my choice is a timber fishing boat. Timber boats look great. They’re often varnished so you can see the color and grain of the timber, and are hand made usually, so they have style. A timber fishing boat is a fine looking item.

But when you’re thinking of buying a boat for fishing, it isn’t really looks that count. Of course great looks are nice, but you need a boat that’s tough, hard wearing, and long lasting, and doesn’t take up lots of your precious fishing time on maintenance.

A timber boat is high maintenance. Trust me, I’ve had quite a few. You’re always sanding timber, varnishing timber, repairing timber and lots more. Now if you’re happy to be doing that then that’s great, but recognize that’s the price you pay for a great looking timber fishing boat. And a timber boat is often heavy, and will not last well, particularly if you aren’t as diligent with your maintenance as you could be. And they puncture easily when you hit something, as I did last week.

But if you’re not an enthusiast for working on boats then timber isn’t your best choice.

What you want in a fishing boat is this. It needs to be tough. It needs to be low maintenance. It needs to be puncture resistant. It needs to last forever without spending hours working on it. It needs to be easily repairable. And it needs to be cost effective.

For me the best choice fishing boat is an aluminum fishing boat. Aluminum has properties which make it the perfect material for building fishing boats. It is very light and strong for it’s weight, and can be easily welded, so is ideal for both building and repairing. It is extremely long lasting, and is very resistant to puncture. Now of course that doesn’t mean it can’t be damaged, as it can. But you need to hit it pretty hard to do some serious damage. And if you did that to a timber or fiberglass boat it will be very seriously damaged. And an aluminum boat may just dent, rather than fracture, so you can head right back home with nothing more to show than a dent, instead of possibly be the subject of a rescue from a sinking boat.

And it lasts forever if treated right. If you get a great aluminum fishing boat and treat it well you may well find yourself leaving it to your kids.

Because aluminum boats are light for their strength they often need a smaller engine, and the engine is probably the highest cost item. A smaller engine costs less, and uses less fuel.

And with a smaller engine they are also lighter and easier to handle.

And they require little maintenance. Make sure you hose your boat down after a day out, especially in saltwater, and if you drop a lead sinker make sure you pick it up, as it’s not great to leave any other metal in contact with aluminum, otherwise you don’t need to do too much maintenance at all. More fishing time.

And because aluminum boats last so well they also retain their resale value well. I bought a used aluminum fishing boat 2 years ago and it is currently worth a little more than I paid for it.

So there’s plenty of good reasons to buy an aluminum fishing boat. Unfortunately they aren’t cheap if you want to buy a new boat, but for the same reasons I’ve mentioned above, it’s way better to buy a used aluminum boat, as a used boat is usually much cheaper than a new one, and retains it value well. I would never buy a new aluminum boat.

So grab yourself a great used aluminum fishing boat and get fishing this summer, it’s the best way to get on the water.

You’ll soon enough find out there are a number of different ways to go, depending on your needs and budget. Are you looking for something very straightforward and uncomplicated you can quickly fit on your pickup? Or maybe you want something more sophisticated you can use for both tournament fishing and recreational fishing?

Another option – if money isn’t your biggest concern – could be to look into a custom built boat with everything just the way you want!

You will probably know why you’re looking for an aluminum fishing boat as opposed to a fiberglass or steel boat, but lightness (greater performance or fuel savings) and strength (around 35,000 pounds per square inch (psi) will deform it as opposed to 30,000 psi for mild steel) are probably the greatest advantages.

Price also come into play as many an aluminum fishing boat owner have reported looking around for similar fiberglass boats and being put off by the prices.

In addition it is not only the purchase price, but also the maintenance costs afterwards which one need to take into account.

Aluminum is practically maintenance-free. If left unpainted aluminum will form a supertight layer of aluminum oxide on its surface and then will stay that way indefinitely.

What else is great about owning an aluminum fishing boat? Aluminum is fireproof and non-toxic; it is natural, and the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust. It is easily repairable, and a great advantage for boats: aluminum won’t absorb water!

What about price? Well, you can start looking at something that was designed to fit right into small pickup truck beds like a Meyers Explorer 12 Jon Boat. This one goes for only a few hundred dollars!

Then you can move up to something much more advanced like the Tracker Pro Angler V-16. The Tracker features large lockable rod storage that holds up to 7′6″ rods, divided aerated livewell with Flow-Rite aeration, a deluxe console with a simulated burlwood switch panel and more.

On the Tracker there’s always plenty of room for tackle, people and gear. Even an amateur would know that this was a great aluminum fishing boat after only one ride!

Then there’s the Ranger Cherokee 217, which is known for an extremely wide front casting deck. It also features an extension-deck option to make it even bigger. Unfortunately Ranger stopped making them, but if you can find one, rest assured it’s a solid boat. Crestliner’s boats can now offer a similar quality in a bass boat.

You may also want to look at unique boats like those of Design Concepts. Their aluminum fishing boats are crafted with a revolutionary hull configuration called Drop-Keel. Instead of being flat on the bottom like other boats, Design Concepts boats are engineered to drop just below the water line before turning upward at the bow. This feature keeps the cutting edge of your boat in the water at all times.

Design Concepts also offer a “true lifetime warranty”: even if you sell your boat, the warranty stays with it, ensuring you the highest value retention of any boat you can buy.

How about a custom-built aluminum fishing boat? As an example, King Salmon Marine lets you choose many details like the position of the console, overall length and hight, bottom width and thickness – even the type of aluminum alloy!

Nothing scares recreational and amateur boaters more than trying to drive their boat up parallel alongside a structure such as a jetty or Pier. Have you ever driven your boat too hard into a pier? If so, below are some tips that will help prevent damage to your vessel and to your ego.

The points below are useful for boaters with an outboard engine or stern drive inboard engines.

Firstly, drive your boat slow. When approaching any object on the water you should approach at the slowest speed in which your boat can still manoeuvre. If you go too slow the controls may not work, so have a few goes to find what the lowest speed your boat can do whilst still maintaining control. The slower you go the more time you will have to react to any situation that may arise so this point is vital.

Make sure everyone on board is prepared and knows what side you will be coming in on. Have ropes secured ready to tie your boat up but make sure these lines are kept onboard whilst the boat is travelling in the water so they don’t get tangled around the propeller. The tides, wind and other boat users will all effect your approach pattern so be sure to assess your options and choose the best way to proceed. You need to avoid other boat users and try to go into the wind or the current (whichever force is greater). If your boat is large and you have fenders, it is time to get them into place.

You should approach the pier at roughly a 45 degree angle. Try to maintain your speed for at least 100 feet before you reach the pier. Once you get to around two boat lengths from the pier it is time to jump into action.

Turn the controls away from the pier. This will cause the boats back end to swing in towards the pier. The initial turn does not need to be violent as even a small turn will get the back of the boat swinging in.

Once the above has started happening switch the engine into neutral and let the boats momentum push the boat alongside the pier.

Whilst you are slowly drifting in, turn the motor in so the propeller faces the pier (i.e. turn the wheel towards the Pier). This will feel back to front as to what you should be doing but it will have no impact on the direction of the boat as the engine is in neutral.

Once you are within reaching distance of the pier, switch the engine to reverse and give the engine a little throttle. If done correctly and the motors propeller is facing the pier, the reverse thrust will push in the back end of the boat to the pier. Once again, the throttle does not need to be violent. Just give the engines a short burst and then put back into neutral and the momentum should push the back end in alongside the pier.

If done correctly the entire boat should now be parallel with the pier. Make sure to tie up the boat immediately to prevent the boat drifting off again. The whole process is now complete.

The above process can be a little daunting at first although a little practice goes a long way. Try practicing against a forgiving object such as a pier with rubber guards alongside or put fenders down to lessen any impact. With a little practice you are sure to become confident with this manoeuvre.

Inflatable fishing boats mean amazing things to new fishermen all across the country. Yet they mean even more anxiety for fish.

In the old days, if you wanted to head to the best spots on the lake or where the tides converged at that exact spot on the ocean, or the bay or the river, you had to own a boat. A big expensive, gas guzzling boat.

Those days are over. And that’s because inflatable fishing boats have become the rage among avid fishermen looking to get out there affordably. In fact, as the sport of fishing (not catching) expands in much the same exponential way that golf is, the need for more and more affordable boats has become increasingly focused.

And while the entire inflatable sector of the boating industry started out as a way for the Navy to ferry torpedos from one ship to another, and while they then grew into rescue-focused mainstays, inflatable fishing boats have really come into their own.

Outstanding materials and fabrics, revolutionary new stitching abilities for seamless, powerful seams, and a dedication to durability that had never been considered in the category before, inflatable fishing boats are now allowing people to do what they have never been able to do had they not had a boat.

Really fish.

Now dads are able to take friends out onto the lake to spend some quality time talking about things they were never able to on the shore. Moms are able to take spins on calmed waters after storms.

And one of the interesting benefits about owning one of these inflatable fishing boats is the ability for the riders to feel every lap of every wave. Being in such a smaller vessel, you will experience being on the water much more naturally.

The bond between man, woman and water just is more REAL in an inflatable!

If you love to fish, if you own aprons and grilling things and stationary that tells the world that you are an angler, and you have always wanted to own a boat, then you have to look into the extraordinary delights in owning one of these inflatable fishing boats!

I have explained elsewhere why I think aluminum is the only way to go when buying a fishing boat. There are a stack of reasons why aluminum fishing boats make the best boats.

However I’m sure you’ve found, if you’ve been doing some homework, that new aluminum boats aren’t cheap. For all the reasons I’ve explained about why aluminum boats make the best boats, aluminum fishing boats are extremely popular, and supply and demand being what it is, this make aluminum boats very expensive when buying brand new.

However there are some very good reasons for buying a used aluminum fishing boat, and if you do it right you can even get your fishing boat for free once you’ve sold it. Allow me to explain.

Buying a used fishing boat is way cheaper than buying a new boat. Like everything, when you buy new you pay a premium for that. When you buy a new car you lose a stack of money the day you drive it out of the showroom, and you’d probably be unable to sell it for what you paid for it, even if it’s got no miles on it.

It’s exactly the same with fishing boats. When you buy a new boat you’ll immediately lose quite a bit of money. So you can guarantee that when you come to sell it some years along, probably because you want a bigger one, you’re sure to lose some money.

HoWever if you buy a used aluminum fishing boat the chances are pretty good that it will cost you little or nothing once you’ve sold it. I use my own experience as an example. I bought a second hand 12 foot used aluminum fishing boat 2 years ago. I’ve used it for quite a few fishing trips over that time, and have 2 kids, so as they grow I am beginning to think about buying a bigger boat.

I recently started looking at prices for used aluminum boats and am quite convinced that my boat is worth as much, if not a fraction more than what I paid for it 2 years ago. So when I sell it, assuming I get what I paid for it, I have paid nothing for 2 years use of my fishing boat. That wouldn’t have ever happened if I bought my boat brand new. So in effect I’ve had my fishing boat for 2 years, for free.

This is because aluminum boats are pretty bomb proof, and last forever. So they retain their second hand value extremely well. A good aluminum boat will last long enough so that, if you keep it, you could probably will it to your kids. So they don’t deteriorate too much over time. This means that even an older boat is probably in good condition, and so will have good value.

Of course you need to take care of your boat, it you’ve banged it around and filled it with dents or scratched the paintwork a lot it won’t retain it’s value as well.

And of course you need to buy well, if you pay too much for your boat then you won’t get that back when you sell. But assuming that you buy a great used aluminum fishing boat at a fair price the chances are pretty good that it won’t cost you much, or anything, over the time you’ve got your boat, if you treat it well.

That’s how you buy a used aluminum fishing boat, for free.

When it comes to fly fishing, pontoon boats are an excellent choice. Many have a wrong impression of pontoon boats. When you hear that word you may be thinking of the huge party boats that clutter lakes or the small kinds with peddles. However, there are other pontoon boats that are designed specifically for fishing and can seat one to two people.

For those not familiar with pontoon fly fishing boats they are typically small, not over eight feet in length although you can get them in larger sizes. The fisherman will have two pontoons on either side of them that sit on the water. These pontoons are either inflatable or solid air bladders. The pontoon boat has a hull that is V shaped so that there is very little water resistance when paddling, providing the fisherman with excellent maneuverability. The two pontoons are connected by a frame, which contains the sitting area. When moving they are paddled similar to a rowboat.

When compared to other fishing boats, pontoon fly fishing boats are still relatively new. It wasn’t until the 1980s that they first became commonly available. However, they are quickly gaining popularity in the fly fishing world because of their many benefits. Consider the benefits you can gain from getting pontoon fly fishing boats.

The Benefits

There is good reason that pontoon fly fishing boats have become popular. Anyone who wants to do fly-fishing can have many benefits with a pontoon boat. Next time you are considering a boat for your fly-fishing needs consider the benefits you can have with a pontoon boat.

First is the maneuverability. The V shaped hulls of a pontoon boat makes them very easy to maneuver even with the most basic of paddling techniques. The frame of a pontoon boat makes it very easy for a single person to have powerful strokes, this means you can make quick turns or long paddles depending on what you need.

Second is durability. Pontoon boats are very rugged and have been designed specifically to meet the hazards of fly-fishing on rough rivers.

Third is versatility. Pontoon boats can work just as well on rivers or lakes. Some pontoon boats can even work on Class Three whitewater or Class Four if you are a skilled peddler. This means that no matter where you want to fly fish you can take your pontoon boat with you.

Fourth is portability. Not only can you use a pontoon boat in many types of water, but also they are extremely portable and easy to get to your location. The inflatable type of pontoon boat can fit in most trunks. Sold air bladder pontoon boats may not fit in the trunk but they often will fit in the bed of a pickup truck. All pontoon boats are light, making it easy for even a single individual to carry and set them up.

Finally they have easy organization. Since pontoon boats were designed for fly-fishing they have many little compartments on the frame so you can easily store all of your fishing needs including rods, reels and other necessities.

With all of these benefits maybe you should consider pontoon fly fishing boats.
